By Material

Typical Board Grades

Solid Bleached Sulphate (SBS, SBB) AZ

This material is a premium grade virgin fibre bleached face middle and reverse. Offering a very good print surface often selected for luxury products and products where preservation of aroma, flavour and hygiene are important. The material is recyclable.

Metalised Polyester (Silver Board) (Metpol)

This material is premium grade laminate, generally made from Folding Boxboard laminated to metalised polyester film to give a bright silver sheet. Other finishes are available such as holographic or coloured. This material is often used for promotional or premium products. This material is only recyclable where facilities exist although Portabio a recyclable product does exist using FSC certified base material and film that is recyclable.

Folding Boxboard (FBB) GC2, (White Back FBB) GC1

Made from virgin fibres that have not been recycled. It is typical of the material used in many food packaging applications. It has a cream back and offers a good printing surface. The relative stiffness and consistency of folding boxboard justifies its extensive use in machine packing applications. The material is recyclable.

Kraft Board (KFT) (CNK) GN4

Made from unbleached virgin fibres it has a brown back and middle and white coated face. Kraft board is extremely strong and has a higher stiffness to caliper ratio than FBB or WLC. This material retains high wet strength and is often used for freezer products and beverage multi-packs. Because of its brown back it has been taken up for some lines used "inside out" to promote the natural or rustic look. The material is recyclable.

White Lined Chipboard (WLC) GD1, (White Back WLC) GT1

Made from recycled waste. This material is not generally used for direct food contact and has the lowest stiffness to caliper ratio, however it is used widely for packaging many consumer items. The material is recyclable.
